Introducing our new Musical Director – Anthony Chater

We are delighted to announce that Anthony Chater will be joining The Canbury Singers as our new Musical Director, starting on Monday 7 September.

Anthony brings an impressive breadth of musical experience to the choir. He studied Music at Christ Church, Oxford, where he sang in the Cathedral Choir and directed the College’s voluntary choir, before completing a Master’s in Musicology at King’s College London.

He has spent several years singing with professional church choirs and, following a year conducting the Solis Choir, founded Symbel Choir in 2024. Since then, he has directed Symbel in a range of services and concerts, including performances of Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu nostri and Haydn’s Nelson Mass. He has also led weekend residencies at Bath Abbey, Coventry Cathedral and Beverley Minster.

Anthony has undertaken conducting training with the Royal Northern College of Music and Sing for Pleasure, and is also a regular performer on both piano and organ.

Come and sing with us!

To celebrate Anthony joining us, we are opening our doors for three weeks of open rehearsals from Monday 7 September.

If you have sung before and want to join a choir  — this is the perfect opportunity to come along, meet us and sing with The Canbury Singers.

Over the three weeks, we’ll be starting work on one of the great choral masterpieces: Mozart’s Requiem, which we will perform in early 2027.

There’s no obligation to join straight away — just come along, sing with us, meet Anthony and see what you think!

New singers are very welcome, so why not give it a try? ?

We’re looking forward to welcoming Anthony and beginning this exciting new chapter for The Canbury Singers.
